Content design: Sign in with a passkey on Windows

Role: Content designer

Overview

Passkeys offer a faster, more secure replacement for passwords. As the future of online authentication, they eliminate many of the risks associated with traditional sign-ins, making it simpler and safer for people to access their accounts. I had the opportunity to help design the passkey experience for Windows, contributing to a more secure future while reaching millions of users worldwide.

  • Skills: Content design, content strategy

  • Audience: Windows users

  • Tools: Figma

  • Collaborators: 1 product designer, 1 content designer, 1 product manager, 1 engineer

Strategy

Drawing on the FIDO alliance guidelines, I created a few ground rules for this experience:

  • Keep it simple: When first introducing passkeys, avoid going into technical details. Focus on plain, easy-to-understand language.

    • “Create a new passkey”

  • Pair the unfamiliar with the familiar: When possible, associate passkeys with face, fingerprint, or PIN to build recognition and trust in the sign-in process.

    • “Use Windows Hello to sign in with your face, fingerprint, or PIN”

  • Build confidence: For many users, this will be their first experience with passkeys. Use crisp, clear language to explain what’s happening at each step.

    • “Choose where to save this passkey”.
